Woods

"This neighborhood has the most improbable     backwoods ever"

The Woods next to Babylon Gardens, also known as the forest, are home to many of the characters in the Housepets! universe. Most of the recurring characters that live here live with Jessica in her den.

General Information[]

The wildlife in the woods is varied and includes raccoons, possums, squirrels, deer, rabbits, skunks, magpies, eagles, and bears, as well as wolves and mountain lions. It is also home to the "The Crazy Old Man Who Only Speaks In Limericks."

The woods are vast. At one point, Grape and Peanut travel a great length into the woods and Peanut comments that they "must be clear in the next county". Daryl also mentioned once that he grew up "in the deep woods", and it would make sense that a wolf pack as large as his would need a lot of territory.

The forest critters are believers of the religion unofficially called Openerdom. This includes the belief that Zach Arbelt is a prophet titled "The Opener of Ways" who has divine powers. Pete's Temple is a sacred place for them and can also be found in the woods. The temple was destroyed after the events of the Temple Crashers 2 story arcs, and now only the rubble remains.

History[]

The first wild animals from the woods to appear were Falstaff and Custom Ink when they try to steal trash from the Sandwich residence. Although they were not tagged, small hints would later appear and prove the identity of these two raccoons (read their character pages for more info). The actual woods are first seen during Thematic Arc of Questionable Quality, and not long after, Grape has a dream where Peanut takes her there (calling it the forest) where they first meet Pete the Gryphon. Later, the Wolf Pack is introduced as having recently moved out of the woods and into Babylon Gardens because of the poor living conditions in the wild.

Zach meets the forest critters

The woods take a greater role during the story arc Oops I Arced in late 2009. In this arc, Custom Ink takes Zach Arbelt into the woods where she reveals to him Pete's temple, saying that it holds the power to make animals and humans equal, and that nobody has managed to solve it's "mystical lock". Zach somehow manages to open the temple, causing the forest critters to proclaim him as the "Opener of Ways". This would be the start of Zach's religious following of forest animals claiming that he is a prophet with divine powers, despite Zach's protests. Inside the temple Zach also manages to accidentally free Pete from his imprisonment by activating the mana pool, accelerating the events of the Cosmic Game.

Later on, the woods returned to the spotlight during Yes, Jessica, There Is An Opener Of Ways, which debuted in late 2013. Here we are introduced to Jessica and her friend Custom Ink. In this arc we see the poor conditions that the forest critters live in; they suffer from the cold of winter and don't have access to the medicine needed to treat a simple fever. It's clear that they [https://www.housepe tscomic.com/comic/2013/12/09/cubby-hole/ find comfort] believing in the "Opener of Ways", hoping that he might answer their prayers. Jessica, on the other hand, realizes that the Opener is a myth that the animals shouldn't waste their time on.

The lives of the forest critters would take a turn for the better when Rock Milton decided to renovate Jessica's den for his TV show: Flip That Den!. The end result would be a modern, three-story tall building complete with solar power and a rain collector. Jessica quickly agrees to let her friends and other forest critters move in so that they no longer have to freeze in their shabby dens.

At a later time, some of the Wolf Pack take a trip back to the woods where they used to live during the story arc Call o' th' Wild. Here we are introduced to Gale the mountain lion and her cub Pueblo who live there, before they also decide to move out of the woods and into human society. This has led to an even better quality of life for the other forest animals, who don't need to worry as much about being eaten.

Raccoons[]

Woodland Critters (including the Raccoons): These guys are simply everywhere in the back woods, though they usually don’t want to be seen.[1]

Raccoons are the only species of critters that have their own general tag: "Raccoons". It was first used to tag Falstaff and Custom Ink in the story arc The Raccoons until they got their own tags, and it's otherwise used on other unnamed raccoons.

Falstaff and Truck Falstaff and Truck

Falstaff and Truck
A duo of raccoons who are often planning on how to steal food for their next meal. Falstaff is the brain of the pair, always confident in his "knowledge" which is mostly incorrect, for instance when he explains that a nut allergy is when eating a nut urges an owl to eat you. Meanwhile Truck, naive as he is, believes Falstaff without questioning him. They both live in Jessica's den.

Custom Ink and Tiny Tum Custom Ink and Tiny Tum

Custom Ink and Tiny Tum
A young raccoon mother and one of her kits. Ink is a devout follower of the "Opener of Ways" and was one of the first to proclaim Zach Arbelt as the Opener. She has been the most invested in her belief, despite Zach repeatedly telling her that he's just a regular rabbit. Ink lives in Jessica's den with her children, of which only Tiny Tum has been named while the others are tagged simply as "Raccoons".

Forest Critters[]

The "Forest Critters" tag is a general tag reserved for the woodland animals that aren't raccoons or bigger predators like Miles and Gale. Some of the recurring characters that fall under this category have been given their own tags as well, and they are as follows:

Jessica

Jessica
Jessica is a possum who was introduced as the star of the story arc Yes, Jessica, There Is An Opener Of Ways. Unlike her fellow woodland animals, she does not believe that Zach Arbelt is the prophetic "Opener of Ways" and thinks that the animals are fools for believing that he can save them with miracles. This led her to confront Zach herself, where she learns the he never wanted to be the "Opener" in the first place. They later develop a romantic relationship, and now Zach basically lives in her renovated den with her and many of the other forest animals.

Cory

Cory
A heterochromatic skunk with thieving tendencies. His full name is Cilantro, but he goes by Cory. He first appeared in Rabbit’s Foot when he swindled Zach out of a collar by putting on a con performance with Trinket. Jessica reluctantly agreed to let him live in her luxurious den after it was remodeled during Flip That Den!, despite the fact that he had again teamed up with Trinket in order to sabotage the renovation.

Trinket

Trinket
A magpie with an obsession for shiny trinkets, which is why she has teamed up with Cory multiple times in order to steal things. Most recently she instead worked with Herman Steward in his plot to use his cursed golden coin to turn humans into animals during the My Life As A Teenage Squirrel story arcs. She would fly towards her unsuspecting victims and touch them with the coin before flying off. She runs away with Steward and his coin after their plot was revealed, and take refuge in a cave before reappearing in HECKRAISER.

Draig and Craig Draig and Craig

Draig and Craig
The mortal reincarnations of the celestials Spirit Dragon and Pete the Gryphon respectively, who were punished with mortality by Kitsune for losing the Cosmic Game. They are young foxes being raised by their mother, Kix, and they are completely powerless compared to their former omniscient celestial forms, which Craig is especially bitter about. They live with their mother in Jessica's Den.

Kix and Kitsune Kix and Kitsune

Kix and Kitsune
Kix is Draig and Craig's mother, and Kitsune has stepped in to help Kix raise them. Kix doesn't take her kits' claims of their previous celestial lives seriously, convinced that they simply have vivid imaginations. Kitsune plays along, even though he knows of their true identities, and teases them about it.

Herman Steward

Herman Steward
Previously a human, Steward was transformed into a badger by coming into contact with a cursed coin from Pete's temple after he attempted, and failed, to steal Keene Milton's fortune during the Temple Crashers 2 story arcs. He then moved into Jessica's den and started plotting on how to get revenge on Keene. He eventually used the cursed coin to transform more humans into animals in hopes that they would join Keene Milton's Equal Chance Program, taking up his resources and bankrupting him. He was caught red-handed, but narrowly escaped the police with his coin. He took refuge in a cave before reappering in HECKRAISER.

Others[]

Wolf Pack

Wolf Pack
The wolves previously lived in the woods before moving into Babylon Gardens when they became dissatisfied with the awful conditions of living in the wild. Lucretia has even mentioned how young cubs sometimes don't survive through winter. Now they are supported by the Equal Chance Program and have food, heating, and modern medicine.

Gale and Pueblo Gale and Pueblo

Gale and Pueblo
A mountain lion and her young cub. Gale is an old friend of Miles who lived with them in the woods, but conflict and heartbreak ended up severing their relationship, and she stayed after the Wolves left the forest. Much later, During Call o' th' Wild, the wolves return to the forest and meet Gale, who eventually ends up moving out of the forest

Hermit

Hermit
A crazy old man who only speaks in limericks. He lives in a cabin in the woods, and doesn't appear very often, mostly to give characters directions in the form of riddles.
