Keene Milton is a major recurring character in Housepets!. He and the other Milton Ferrets were introduced in Money Sharks.

As the heir of Henry Milton, Keene's main goal in the series has been to achieve his father's dream of creating human-animal equality, which he has tried to accomplish in many different ways.

Original Site Biography[]

The de-facto chief of the bunch. Keene is one of the few that feels guilty about inheriting all that money and not carrying on his owner’s legacy to any significant degree. These pangs of guilt subside when he drowns himself in orange soda.

Personality[]

The most developed among the Milton ferrets, Keene is considered the "leader" of the group. He is self-centered, cunning, and ambitious; capable of being cold and manipulative towards others since to him anything is acceptable as long as it leads to a successful and profitable result.

Although Keene appears supportive of the Babylon Gardens community and its residents, such as offering to host King's wedding, most of time even these acts come with ulterior motives of furthering his dream of achieving equality. Keene often feels guilt over inheriting his father's money, not effectively carrying on his legacy, and his exploiting others; in these instances he ends up drowning his sorrows in orange soda. During The 4 Animals You Meet In Heaven, while visiting heaven he has an important epiphany: the reason he did everything up until this point was not just to make his father proud, but to be the one who can make life better for everyone, like his father once did for him and his siblings.

However, Keene's ambition can lead to extreme shortsightedness, and often does not care what happens either himself or the people he involves with, as long as his goals for animal-equality are met. Such examples are making a deal with a demi-god, trying to force Sabrina into a political marriage to an African prince (despite Sabrina's protests), and nearly bankrupting the Milton estate funding the Equal Chance Program.

The worst example of this shortsightedness was when he attempted to use the mana in Pete's temple; despite both Tarot and Sabrina arguing that it could shatter reality. However Keene was so focused about finally creating equality that he nearly destroyed the world with the mana--but he was stopped by Breel who stood between him and the mana. It was only when Keene angrily rejected him (which caused Breel to accidentally tear open a portal to the netherworld and get captured) did Keene finally realize that Breel was more important to him than anything else, and selflessly went to rescue him--leading the two to kiss and start a relationship.

After these events, Keene decides to step down from the Equal Chance Program and move out of the Milton Manor in order begin the long road of rebuilding and making amends with the people who he had hurt along the way (though he occasionally lapses now and again).

General Information[]

Keene is the de facto leader of The Milton Ferrets who had inherited most of their adoptive father's wealth. Keene serves as the leader among the six ferrets and also manages the various Milton businesses, a role that doesn't always stop him from wasting money any more than the rest. Unlike the others, however, Keene feels he must use the money left to them to fulfill their 'father's' dream of reaching equality between humans and animals--something that he continually attempts throughout the comic, for instance by creating the Equal Chance Program.

Keene has appeared in different arcs with many roles; often pulling the strings. While mostly a supporting character in the earlier days of the comic, he has gradually been given more time in the spot-light as both a protagonist and an antagonist. Most of his early roles involved him and the other ferrets making outrageous purchases or business ventures with their wealth (to the disdain of the estate's executor Herman Steward); opening a theme park themed theme park, being the secret-mastermind behind the water-war between cats and dogs and filling the Milton Manor's pool with all sorts of things. After Karishad got him locked in the ferret pen at the zoo, he immediately recruited the fox to help him with the secrets within Pete's temple (which had been moved from its original location to his yard). In addition, he officiated and funded King's wedding, and the next year also helped when Bailey was taken to Australia by funding the trip and sending Rock to profit off it. He later hosts a massive fair in his yard in order to counter a state tax.

In order to honor his dad's original dream, Keene attempts to achieve animal-equality in several ways. The first was creating the Equal Chance Program, making the Wolf Pack its first members, then he attempts to raid Pete's temple, where he ends up making a deal with Pete instead. He also attempted to politically marry Sabrina to the Feragan prince Jata to benefit them both, which ended up failing after Fido confessed his feelings for Sabrina and disrupted the wedding. After these attempts fail; Keene then resorts to using legal and financial means to further his goal, which nearly gets him assassinated via drowning in his limo. He visits Heaven; where he meets four animals to help him on his journey; a pine martin named Breel, Cerberus, his birth mother and his deceased adoptive father Henry Milton. There he has an epiphany and he realizes all he has done was to honor Mr. Milton for improving his own life, but at the last minute he wakes up and survives the assassination attempt--his attempted killer is later caught.

Running out of methods and money; he makes a desperate attempt to create human-animal equality by selfishly using the mana pool in the temple despite warnings from Tarot and Sabrina over the dangers. He creates a fake "LARP" event and tricks Joey and his friends as well as Peanut, Grape, Res and Max to explore the temple for him. Breel later returns as his guardian angel to assist him. Max is the first to reach the pedestal, where a scroll has been placed with a spell that summons Keene and Breel to the mana pool, where he tries to use it to finally achieve his goal. Tarot angrily fights Keene off, warning him that he's underestimating the effects of the mana. Keene, on the other hand sees the mana as the biggest opportunity for changing the world and nearly succeeds in getting to it before Breel intervenes to prevent Keene from misusing it. Keene, caught in the heat of the moment, angrily rejects Breel for standing in his way and tells him to go away and leave him alone. This causes the heartbroken musild to shed a tear into the mana--accidentally open a portal to the netherworld and subsequently be kidnapped by an apparition called "The Forgotten" to a dark, sinister alternative realm called Pandemonium.

Keene realizes his mistake and goes out to rescue him and becomes captured himself, enslaved to a devilish figure named "Eudoant". However, a small demon creature Keene met crossing into Pandemonium helps him escape and reunites him with Breel. Keene, finding Breel in chains, finally realizes that Breel is more important to him than achieving his dreams, and the two kiss one another. Their kiss evaporates the chains and the three, Keene, Breel, and the little demon escape back to the Temple. As the temple started to collapse and the little demon vanishes, Keene uses his power to "wake up" and thereby transport himself, Breel, and several others safely back to his mansion bedroom.

By the end of their misadventure, Keene and Breel move into the Milton Mansion to be together; after Cerberus tells Breel he has to return to Heaven, however Keene begs for Breel to stay and Breel incarnates to be with him. In response to his partner's sacrifice, Keene resigns from the chair of the Milton Foundation, turning his authority over to his sister Lana before moving to a middle class home in Babylon Gardens. He also discovers Herman Steward was plotting against him with Thomas Milton (who had been turned into a camel by the temple's cursed treasure--something Keene deliberately didn't mention) and fires him. This leads to Steward being transformed into a badger by one of the temple's cursed coins.

Keene once again takes up an important role after a seventeen-year old boy named Marion is transformed into a squirrel. Keene places Marion into the Equal Chance Program, but complications arrive when Marion's girlfriend Lois is is transformed into a lynx. The two believe Keene is responsible, but he isn't, though he does ponder the idea of turning humans into animals will kick start a new world order. The culprit turns out to be Steward; who has been using the cursed temple coin to transform people in order to create more demand for the Equal Chance Program (knowing Keene will try to save everyone), and eventually bankrupting the ferret in order to spite him (Steward had been trying to curb Keene's spending prior to being fired). Steward escapes, and Keene realizes that his actions have created dire consequences and have effectively ruined an innocent person's life.
