Great Kitsune, or simply Kitsune (mortal name Kits) is a recurring character in Housepets!. He was first introduced in Dog Days of Summer and his mortal form was introduced in HECKRAISER REVELATIONS.

He was the game master of the Cosmic Game and acted as a mediator between Pete the Gryphon and Spirit Dragon. Karishad is his younger brother.

Physical Appearance[]

As a celestial, Kitsune's main form is a cream-colored kitsune, with red colored eyes and featuring the nine tails associated with them. He revealed he looks like this because "some ancient Japanese guy believed foxes were magi(k)al."

Kitsune also has several other forms as well; the most famous is as a gold statue with him pulling his left eye and sticking his tongue out inscribed with the words Or Was It? (referring to the "wake up" gag), although this text can change at Kitsune's will.

Towards the end of the game, he appeared in more casual attire, wearing a red shirt, a checkered purple jacket, brown pants and wearing a yin-yang symbol necklace. When disguised as a mortal, he appears as he usually does except he only has one tail.

He also has a more demi-god like form, in which he gains archaic red markings on his body, his eyes turn red, and flaming colored orbs (similar to when he offered King his boon) appear between his tails (Rick has stated this form is way too hard to draw.)

As a mortal fox, now known as Kits, he has light brown fur covering most of his body, whith darker fur on his ears, tail-tip and hands, with a lighter shade on his underside. He now also shares the same fur mark on his nose as Karishad.

Personality[]

Great Kitsune has a very mischievous personality, and most of the time is seen bearing a sly grin, playing the role of a "Trickster." Although he is inclined to follow the rules, he is known to pull a few tricks...simply to annoy Pete, for example. He is fully aware that Pete and Spirit Dragon are incredibly immature, and has fun exploiting them over it.

It is shown he has a fondness for mortals, and has a personal policy of "intrinsic benevolence", so that the actions of the game will not bring them any harm. However he does not personally interfere with their lives, as when he refused to send Satau back to his time, or own undo the curse placed on Marion and Lois and instead encourages those to instead find their own solutions or offer cryptic hints that point those in the right direction.

He eventually starts dating a mortal fox named Kix; as her two kits are the reincarnated versions of Pete and Spirit Dragon, claiming to "help" raise them.

General Information[]

Great Kitsune is a member of the Celestials, or "The Cosmic Nerds." Unlike Pete and Spirit Dragon, he is the Game Master of Universes & Unrealities, and as such, tends to take an indirect role in the game itself; he mediates rule disputes between Pete and the Spirit Dragon, and doesn't appear to think very highly of them due to their constant squabbling. As a celestial, he is "everywhere all the time" and can appear whenever he wants at will, though he mainly converses through the statue he left in King's room.

King meets him in Dog Days of Summer, where he explains while he cannot turn King back to a human, he can earn rewards for himself by willingly participating in the game. He left behind a gold statue version of himself (which remains in King's room despite numerous attempts to get rid of it.)

During Pete's trial, Pete accuses Kitsune of screwing his plans to prevent the game from having a predictable outcome. Kitsune testifies that he is moderating the game with a standard Book of Fate and cannot perform acts of malice--Pete counteracts this by saying that turning Joel into a dog was helping him rather than hurting him.

Once the game started proper Kitsune moderated as necessary, such as when he explained to Spirit Dragon why she couldn't modify an infinite detection spell to cause damage. However, he fully supported the pets when they decided to collectively forfeit the game; summoning Pete and Spirit Dragon and telling them they had ten minutes to try and convince the others to keep playing. When they both failed, he announced Pete and Spirit Dragon both as the losers, sentencing them to a lifetime of mortality. King finally gets his boon from Great Kitsune, who offers him a choice between the Cosmic Lantern and his watch; living an easy comfortable life as a human, or life the way it is as a dog. King chooses the latter, and is turned into a dog for good.

In Housepets 5000 BC, Tarot visits Kitsune to get a ruling after Spirit Dragon sent her second avatar into the future. He refuses to sent him back on his own, and tells Tarot that she needs to figure it out on her own. He later assures King that his newborn puppies won't be human/dog hybrids, nor will they be the reincarnated versions of Pete and Spirit Dragon (as it would be unfair to Bailey.)

Kitsune returns again in Temple Crashers 2, beginning in Temple Crashers 2: Temple Crasherser as a supporting character; initially joining Joey's team and encouraging Res to fight off The Forgotten. Tarot returns to him after the events and angrily accuses him of making her look like a fool for being unable to handle a situation she was clearly capable of handling. However Kitsune gently reminds she is not Spirit Dragon, she is a mortal, and it is okay not to be perfect.

He made a minor appearance in Hot Springs Encore, when he plays a game of DnD with Lester where he transported him to a dimension where he usurped Lester as king. Later after Pete and Spirit Dragon have been revealed to be incarnated as fox kits; Kitsune offered to help their new mortal mother Kix raise them both (and embarrassing Pete by asking him to call him "Daddy".)

Kitsune's latest appearance is in My Life As A Teenage Squirrel, Part 5, where he meets with Marion and Lois, who are looking for the reason they were turned into animals. While Kitsune is unwilling to reverse their curse nor provides any direct answers (due to his principals with interfering with mortal lives) he does help Marion piece together that the perpetrator was in fact Herman Steward.

Later on, when Eudoant passes through into the mortal realm, Kitsune’s trickster-like composure is finally broken as he frantically seeks help from Cerberus and Bahamut to stop the demon insurrection--eventually spiriting most of Babylon Gardens into Heaven, but leaving those bound by magic(k) behind, including Pete and Dragon's mortal forms, which incites the rage of Kix. In HECKRAISER, Part 2, he gathers a group to return to Earth to help fight off the demons; consisting of Tarot, Keene, Marion, Lois, a red panda named Todd, and Kix.

Trivia[]

  • Kitsune is the only one aware of the fourth wall as evidenced in New Kid . The other character aware of the fourth wall might be Tarot as evidenced in Fond Farewell
  • Kitsune has more forms than any other celestial in the series.
  • None of the other characters have called him by his tagged name, "Great Kitsune" and he is simply referred to as "Kitsune".
