Fido Byron is a character in Housepets!. He first appeared in Fido's Return after graduating from the police academy.

He is the older brother of Bino and Joey, the founder of the Good Ol' Dogs Club, and a member of the K-9 Unit. He is also Sabrina's boyfriend, and kept their relationship a secret until Jungle Fever.

Original Site Biography[]

No, no, thank you for serving your community. You’re an asset to this neighborhood and a great patriot. Me? I’m just an everydog trying to get by in this crazy game we call life.

Fido is the pet community’s leader, working hard every day to help the pets in need, promote adoptions, and keep the peace between cat and dog. On top of that, he was hired on by the local police department for their K-9 program, participates in a number of track and field tournaments, and teaches pups to read in his spare time.

Isn’t he just disgusting?

Not all is liver and potpourri, as Fido has found himself, through a series of poor choices as a pup, in the arms of a cat. Sabrina is Fido’s secret girlfriend, and despite Fido’s strongest attempts to keep everything hush-hush, Sabrina has needs to fulfill. Such as having Fido take care of every little forest critter she was told to get rid of. Fido helps out of the goodness of his heart, but probably also out of the goodness of something else. A recent case he’s deigned to take care of is a mouse named Spo, who Fido has grown rather attached to.

Physical Appearance[]

Fido is taller and has darker brown fur compared to his two brothers Bino and Joey, and he has a dark brown spot over his right eye. Being an officer of the K-9 Unit, he has a muscular, yet lean build. He has orange eyes and is normally seen wearing sunglasses on his head.

Personality[]

Fido generally is a very decent, humble, and honest dog. He is popular among the neighborhood pets; the male-dogs consider him a role model and all the female-dogs are crazy for him. He founded the Good Ol' Dogs Club with his brother Bino and was considered its leader. He claims his many social activities are just him following the role that all dogs should, and does his best to help anyone. However, due to his popularity Bino is openly jealous and envious of him.

However, the biggest secret he had kept from nearly everyone was his relationship with Sabrina, as cat and dog relationships were considered taboo among the club. Fido eventually revealed his relationship publicly so Sabrina wouldn't have to marry Jata, however this caused him to get kicked out of the very club he founded.

Despite that, he is very capable as a member of the K-9 Unit and is one of their most experienced officers.

General Information[]

Fido is the oldest of the three brothers with Bino and Joey and is owned by Ryan Byron. As a younger dog, he founded and was the leader of the Good Ol' Dogs Club, at the time was hosted on someone's patio, and established the "neutral" stance towards cats (although this didn't stop the rampant "cat bias" the majority of the club expresses.)

Fido was introduced later than the other main characters, having been training at the police academy at the start of the comic. The club sets up a party for his return, but Bino, jealous over all of the attention Fido is receiving, attempts to discredit him in a speech. However he is immediately thwarted when Fido humbly shows up asking what the party is for. Fido attempts to have everyone stop praising him, causing Bino to throw more baseless accusations towards him until Grape "subdues" Bino with a frying pan. When Fido comes home, he finds Sabrina waiting for him, who romantically puts her paws on his lips. Grape and Peanut observe from a window and agree never to speak of it again, becoming the only two pets to know of Fido's secret relationship (although Peanut takes a picture with a camera.) Fido also reinstates Peanut into the Good Ol' Dogs Club after the former was kicked out for drawing a dog with a cat's tail.

Later Sabrina asks Fido to relocate a mouse her owner ordered her to dispose of. The mouse, named Spo, turns out to be snarky and condescending; but Fido ends up befriending him and letting him ride on his head, occasionally letting him accompany him on K-9 Unit missions.

When Fido's best friend Fox is kidnapped from the park by two shady characters, the two are caught by Bill Lindberg. One of the two kidnappers, Joel Robinson, attempts to flee but is tackled by Fido. Under Terryson v. Florida Fido arrests Joel and reads him his rights. After Joel reveals his backstory to everyone, Fido can't help but feel sympathy for him.

Fido would go on to make a few ancillary appearances; he led King to Tarot at the summer cookout, visited Theme Park World and participated in the water balloon war on the dog's side. The K-9 Unit is then sent to solve the mystery of missing Aztec artifacts, where they manage to find the artifacts after encountering the ghost of a dead jaguar warrior. Like most of the neighborhood dogs, he later attended King's wedding. However, soon Fido's secret relationship causes his superior Ralph to begin suspecting him to be up to no good.

Fido's relationship came to a head when he discovered Sabrina was to be married to a Feragan prince named Jata. He learned that when Sabrina was a kitten, she and Jata professed "eternal love" to each other before she left the country; the wedding is part of a plan by Keene Milton to create animal-equality. Even though Sabrina and Fido believe they can still continue their relationship after the marriage, during the wedding Fido cannot stand to see Sabrina forcibly wed so he blurts on live television that he is in love with her, stunning most of the other pets. Fido, with the help of the Wolf Pack, fights off Jata before Sabrina is knocked into the pool and gets her dress caught in the open drain. Fido manages to save Sabrina from drowning, and also manages to save Jata too after he is defeated by Uncle Deadeye.

Fido is put on a three week leave for his actions, although Ralph is glad that Fido wasn't doing anything unscrupulous. However, as Bino had also been watching the wedding, he has the Good Ol' Dogs Club formerly remove Fido from the council. Fox was also blindsided by Fido's reveal, while harboring some resentment towards him, also understands why Fido kept it a secret. However, Fido is grateful he no longer has to hide his relationship with Sabrina (although he admits she terrifies him.)

During the events of the Cosmic Game, Sabrina is transported to Australia to fight for Spirit Dragon. Sabrina leaves Fido a note to give to Fox and King (who has reverted to Joel), leading them to the Sandwich residence. After the Game ends, Fido learns where Sabrina is from Peanut and he excitedly tackles her when she returns home a week later. He also participates in two Imaginates!

Nearly three years later, when Keene parks a hot spring in the middle of the street, Ralph sends Fido and the rest of the K-9 Unit inside to apprehend Keene. While Fido is originally focused on the mission, he is convinced to stay in the onsen by Sabrina. Later Mungo finds Keene and has Fido sent to fetch a radio, but a blizzard freezes Fido solid in a block of ice and traps everyone at the spa. The sting operation is eventually completed, although Ralph berates the team for messing around instead of focusing on the task at hand.

Later, a seventeen year old boy named Marion goes missing, and his girlfriend Lois seeks help at the police station, where Fox and Fido are put on the case. The trio tracks Marion, who is now a squirrel, to Jessica's den where Marion reveals he had been transformed into a squirrel. Although Fido disbelieves the situation at first, Fox reminds him he's dating a literal witch. Later when the person responsible is caught, the K-9 Until show up to arrest him, but he scratches Fox's face and flees into the woods, leaving Fido to give chase, but he ultimately gets away.

Trivia[]

  • Fido is another character from Rick Griffin's old "Bino" comic, along with Bino and Joey.
  • Fido and Sabrina are the only cat/dog relationship in the comic.
  • Natalie had a secret crush on Fido until she met Satau instead.
  • Fido was not featured in the comic for nearly four years (3 years and 10 months) in-between the strips My Baby She Wrote Me a Letter in 2015 and Party Goers in 2018, making him the main character who had the largest gap in-between appearances (discounting his appearance in 12 Days of Housepets!.)
